The Gerken's
From Family Farm to Agrihood:
We’re Ryan and Ally, and we moved to Montrose in the summer of 2019 with our three daughters—Penelope, Madeline, and Violette. Drawn here by our love for nature, agriculture, and small-town life, we quickly put down roots and built a life surrounded by the things we care most about: family, animals, and the land.
Between us, we care for quite the crew—5 pigs, 6 dogs, 4 cats, and 16 chickens! Every day on our farm is a new adventure, and we’ve always felt a deep connection to the natural rhythm of life in Western Colorado.
In 2023, our family faced an immense and ongoing hardship that challenged us in ways we never expected. It forced us to pause, reflect, and reimagine how we spend our time and energy. In that space, we found a new clarity—a desire to get creative, live more intentionally, and build something that honors both the land and the precious time we have together as a family.
At the same time, we were watching Montrose grow. New neighborhoods were springing up, but many didn’t reflect the agricultural heritage or outdoor lifestyle that makes this place so special. Beautiful, productive farmland was being paved over, and while the developments had nature-inspired names, they often felt disconnected from the land itself.
That’s when we discovered agrihoods—communities designed around working farms, where agriculture, conservation, and connection are central to everyday life. The more we researched, the more it resonated. This wasn’t just a good idea—it was the path forward for us.
And so, we decided to transform our own farm into Montrose’s first agrihood: Sunset Pastures.
The name Sunset Pastures was inspired by a unique phenomenon on our land—because of the way the terrain rolls and opens to the west, you can actually see the sunset twice. It’s something that never fails to bring us peace.
Fun Fact: Our homesteads are named in honor of our beloved KuneKune pigs, three of whom are now in piggy heaven. Their memory is a daily reminder of why we’re doing this—for love of each other, our animals, the land, and for legacy ❤️❤️❤️.
We’re creating a space that honors the land, supports greater Montrose, and welcomes others into a lifestyle rooted in nature and community.
We can’t wait to welcome you.
